What You'll Learn

Built around real playing, not just drills.

Taught by Calvin — a LASALLE College of the Arts graduate (First-Class Honours, BA Music) and active session musician with nine years of teaching experience — lessons draw on real playing and recording experience, not just theory.

  1. Notes on the Fretboard

Knowing your way around the neck is one of the most important skills for any bass player, built early on.

  2. Setting Your Tone

Learning how to get the sound you hear from your favourite bassists, through technique, pickups, and amp settings.

  3. Technique

Key skills including alternate picking, sliding, and slap and pop, taught with clean execution.

  4. Reading Tab Notation

The format most bass music is written in, making it fast and practical to learn new songs.

  5. Instrument Maintenance

The practical basics of cleaning your bass and changing strings.

  6. Genre Exploration

Funk, blues, R&B, and rock each ask something different of a bass player.

  7. Your Favourite Songs

Transcriptions and guidance for the songs you actually want to learn.

A Realistic Learning Path

Every student moves at their own pace.

Foundation Stage

Fretboard basics, simple grooves, and proper right- and left-hand technique — the groundwork for everything after.

Development Stage

Cleaner tone and timing, broader genre exposure, and playing along to fuller songs with confidence.

Refinement Stage

Techniques like slap and pop, more advanced grooves, and a bass voice that reflects your own musical taste.

Some students move through these stages quickly, others take their time — both are completely normal.

Who This Is For

Built for wherever you're starting from.
